Many factors determine how frequently you need to get your oil changed. As a general rule of thumb we advise motorists to get their oil changed every 3,000 miles or every 3 months with conventional oil. For synthetic oil, every 6,000 miles or every 6 months is sufficient.

However, the make and model of your car as well as driving conditions all impact oil change frequency. In recent years oil chemistry and engine technology have improved so that the oil efficiency lasts longer. While older trucks, cars and SUVs typically do not have engines that run as clean. They often need to have the oil changed more frequently than newer vehicles. It’s a good idea to check your owner’s manual to see what the manufacturer advises.

In addition manufacturer guidelines, drivers must consider their typical driving conditions too. You may not think that quick 10 minute trips to the grocery store or your kid’s school are severe conditions…but they are. Engine oil acts as a cleaner, lubricant and protective barrier between engine components. As it circulates through the engine it picks up deposits. The engine and oil don’t have an opportunity to fully warm up if you are mostly driving short distances. If the oil is still cool it cannot absorb the contaminants in the engine as efficiently. Stop-and-go traffic as well as muddy, rough or dusty roads are also other examples of severe driving conditions. They put more stress on the vehicle and reduce engine performance.

Overtime the oil becomes dirty and thickens. With conventional oils a sludge can form if the oil is not changed regularly. The sludge reduces the engine’s efficiency. Eventually, if left unserviced, sludge can contribute to internal combustion engine problems. Or may even require you to get your engine replaced in severe cases.
